Energy-efficient light bulbs are steadily replacing the pear-shaped Tungsten or incandescent light bulbs. Most of your light fixtures, and that even includes new ones currently sold at stores, are designed for Tungsten bulbs, and not for the coiled compact fluorescent bulbs. Due to their larger size, CFL bulbs won’t fit in the harp of many light fixtures (the harp is the bent metal rod that outlines the bulb and holds the lampshade).
