This studio boom arm is part of the ALZO Studio Boom and is an essential photo studio addition used for overhead illumination in product and portrait photography. The Studio Boom Arm fits light stands with 25mm or 27mm diameter upper sections. It is not advisable to use the ALZO Studio boom arm on stands without air cushioning.
Pros: Well built, easy to setup, and it works.
Cons: Needs a more secure locking mechanism to attach the ALZO 600 light head.
Best Uses: studio work, portraits, still-life, product photography
Describe Yourself: Semi-Pro Photographer
I recently purchased the studio boom arm to go with my ALZO 600 lighting setup. The boom arm is nice 'n' solid (a little thicker than the regular ALZO stand tubing) and feels sturdy when mounted onto the vertical pole via the round coupling unit...which is also well made. The supplied 5LB weight seems to be adequate for the majority of my studio still-life & product shot needs (without having to also use the sandbag that I bought)...altho, I think that may come in handy for securing the bottom of the stand - IF/when I do use the boom at a full length stretch. The coupling adjustment levers are certainly big enough to get a good grip onto when positioning the boom arm and tighten down firmly too. Overall, I don't think there's much to improve on. The only reason that I didn't give this product a full 5 stars...is because the ALZO 600 light unit doesn't sit 100% snuggly onto the boom arm nozzle-end. Personally, I think that there should be a completely secure/firm snap locking mechanism...instead of just the simple, single thread-screw that holds the lamp unit into place. Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
