Muslin Backdrops

Muslin backdrops are the most popular background used by portrait photographers. Muslin is typically an all cotton woven fabric that is batch dyed or hand painted.  Muslins are available in a wide variety of sizes, colors and patterns.

The styles of Muslin Backdrops include:

  • Solid Color

  • Solid color with light texture

  • Multi color mottled

  • Multi color "Old Masters"

  • Scenic

Solid color muslin backdrops derive their particular look by the method of wrinkling and or draping. Draping of the fabric to produce waves in the backdrop introduces dimension and shading. Some backdrops like "Old Masters" and scenics are always hung flat and not draped.

Most muslins are stored crumpled in a duffel bag. When opened and hung from a support, the muslin will have a strong wrinkled texture. This texture may be desired but if the wrinkled texture is to be removed, a garment steamer and lots of time are required. A hung muslin will loose its wrinkles over time. Also, washing and line drying will remove the wrinkles.

Selecting a backdrop size

Although Muslin Backdrops are available in many sizes from 8' x 6' to 12' x 24', the most popular size is 10' wide x 12' long. Another popular size is 10' wide x 24' long as the extra length allows plenty of floor coverage and is commonly used when photographing reclining subjects and children playing.

Geometry of Portrait Photography

This illustration shows why a 10 foot wide backdrop is the minimum acceptable width. The important parameters are the subject to background distance and the camera to subject distance. The subject should be at least 4 feet from the background to prevent strong shadows from falling on the background and to prevent background lights from falling on the subject.

Also, it is desirable for the muslin backdrop to be slightly out of focus and this requires distance from the subject to the background. If you intend to use small apertures then you will probably require more than 4 feet of subject to background distance.

The camera to subject distance of 10 feet or more allows for a slight telephoto focal length which is preferred to maintain proper subject proportions.

If your studio space does not allow for 10 feet or more camera to subject distance, your lens focal length (for full body portraits) will be "wide angle" and this can make subjects look heavy.

Washing a Muslin Backdrop

Most modern muslin backdrops are washable. It is important to check with the manufacturer prior to washing. Wash muslins separately as the dye will will transfer to some extent. Use only a mild detergent without "whiteners" and do not bleach. Each washing will lighten the color somewhat and after several washings the color will stabilize.

Muslin backdrops can be machine or line dried. Line drying has the added benefit of removing wrinkles.

Do not attempt to wash wire frame backgrounds as this will cause the metal frame to rust and destroy the background.
