Graduated Paper Backgrounds

The selection guide lists the various types of photo backgrounds by material, usage, cost and other factors.
 

Graduated background paper is ideal for product presentation. The printed color on graduated paper transitions from a dark color to lighter color and has a matte non-reflective finish. The gradient is exceptionally smooth and when an object is photographed with this type background, a strong sense of depth is created.

Several of these backgrounds are actually not printed on paper but are on a stable heavy weight plastic film. This improves the handling and life of the background and also allows the background to be cleaned of light dirt or dust with a mild detergent.

Graduated backgrounds are supplied in several sizes including

• 42" wide X 62" long

• 31" wide X 43" long

• 21" wide x 15" long

Selecting a Graduated Background

The selection of the graduated background is dependent on the size of the object to be photographed and the coloration. Typically the size or longest dimension of the subject should be no more than 30% of the corresponding dimension of the background. This is because the background will be supported behind the object and then sweep under the object making a 62" long dimension only about 34" high when viewed from the front.

The color should be selected to contrast and complement the object. Grays are the most popular as they are subtle and complement the widest variety of subjects.

Graduated paper backgrounds are frequently used as a sweep inside of a product imaging tent.
