For this shot we reversed the
"key" and "fill" lights, using the barndoor
light shining through our disk diffuser as the "key" light, and the
ALZO 2000 softbox as the "fill" light. The ALZO
2000 Continuous Portrait Studio Kit softbox light is off
camera. The camera is set to
ISO 200. ISO's lower than 200 are not recommended with these lights. The 3 lights include:

The ALZO 2000 on the left is used as our Key (main) light with the barndoors as light intensity adjusters. Our Key light was cast through the ALZO 5-in-1 Reflector/Diffuser Kit configured as a diffuser. We opened the ALZO 2000 barndoors to adjust the key light and moved the diffuser between 2-4 feet from the light for different shadow effects. Using a barndoor light through a diffuser provides very fine intensity adjustment without moving the light. We used the softbox as the fill light (not visible in the setup photo above but it is on the right). It is about 5 feet from the model and set to just above head height. We shut off 2 of the lights on the ALZO 2000 softbox fill light to provide a key to fill ratio of 1:3.5. The Mini-Spot hair light on the right is about 5 feet away from the subject and raised to about 7 feet. The hair light effect is controlled by positioning. The wonderful thing about using continuous lights was that we were able to judge exactly how the ratios would look on the final image without taking any "test" shots as we would have with flash lights. In addition, as we moved the lights and the model we never needed additional test shots because we could visualize the lighting as we repositioned. Image 2 our final portrait for this setup was vignetted with JASC Paint Shop Pro 9 contrast control. No other adjustments were made other than minor cropping. Typical exposure settings for these shots were within a range of f 4.0 @ 1/250 second, ISO set to 200. The camera was the FUJI S7000 |
